On October 31, 2024, ISOC Rwanda joined an engaging conversation hosted by The New Times X Space as part of the “Be Safe Online” campaign spearheaded by the National Cyber Security Authority.

This important event brought together thought leaders and experts from various organizations, including the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, the National Child Development Agency, the National Cyber Security Authority, Get Safe Online, and ISOC Rwanda.

The interactive discussion centered on protecting children online, a growing concern in today’s increasingly digital world. ISOC Rwanda took the stage to spotlight the multifaceted risks children face online, categorized as:

• What They See (Content): Exposure to inappropriate, harmful, or misleading content.
• What They Do (Conduct): Unsafe behaviors or digital habits that may lead to harm.
• Who They Talk To (Contact): Interactions with potentially harmful individuals.
• Contract: The unintentional agreements children may enter, exposing them to privacy or financial risks.

During the discussion, ISOC Rwanda shared its impactful initiatives under its Safer Internet Program aimed at creating a secure and enriching digital space for children. These include:

• Safer Internet Day Celebrations: An annual event raising awareness and inspiring action for a safer Internet.
• Safer Internet Clubs: Established in partner schools, these clubs empower students with knowledge and skills to navigate the online world responsibly.
• Capacity Building on Privacy and Online Safety: Training programs designed to equip children, educators and parents with tools for better online safety.

ISOC Rwanda emphasized that ensuring children’s online safety is a shared responsibility. A collaborative approach involving parents, teachers, local leaders, faith-based organizations, the tech community, journalists, policymakers, law enforcers, and civil society is essential. By working together, these stakeholders can build a safer Internet environment where children can thrive.
